United Nations Association of Saint Louis Hosts Human Rights Consultation on Race, Gender and Criminal Justice Reform

St. Louis, MO, August 23, 2019 – The United Nations Association of Saint Louis (UNA Saint Louis) will host a local Universal Period Review Consultation to constructively set the agenda on a human rights challenge in the United States, collaborate with likeminded community partners, and help catalyze change in the U.S. through a universal UN process. The resulting feedback from this consultation will be included in the United States’ official 2020 Universal Periodic Review report to the UN Human Rights Council. 

Guest expert speakers include The SoulFisher Ministries Founder and CEO Shawntelle Fisher, St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell, St. Louis Community College - Florissant Valley President Dr. Elizabeth Perkins, Senator Jamilah Nasheed, and UM - St. Louis Dept. of Criminology and Criminal Justice Professor Beth Huebner.

Partners include The SoulFisher Ministries and Let’s Start. The event is open to the public and there is no cost to attend.

Who: Residents of the Saint Louis region and expert speakers
What: The focus of this specific consultation will be on the socioeconomic impact of the incarceration of African American women, with emphasis on trauma, education, diversion and re-entry within the criminal justice system.
